Muckenhirn leads Lakers by Panthers

Kayli Muckenhirn's 12 kills led Detroit Lakes to a 25-13, 25-11, 25-23 Mid-State Conference volleyball victory at Park Rapids Thursday night.

Two kills by Olivia Vaadeland, a kill by Justine Rittgers, tips by Mady Vaudrin and Megan Grimes, and an ace serve by Vaadeland kept the Panthers within 9-8 in Set 1. Detroit Lakes closed out the set by going on a 14-5 run as Julia Taylor and Courtney Hedstrom combined for eight service points.

The Lakers continued the momentum in Set 2 by jumping out to a 10-3 lead. Rittgers had a winning tip and kill, but Detroit Lakes ended that set with a 15-8 run.

Three kills by Vaadeland and a pair of tips by Rittgers kept the Panthers within 11-8 in Set 3. After the Lakers extended their lead to 16-9, a block by Vaadeland and Vaudrin, an ace serve by Katelyn Hilmanowski, and a block by Vaadeland pulled Park Rapids to within 16-15. Detroit Lakes led 21-18 before kills by Grimes and Hilmanowski and a block by Hilmanowski gave the Panthers a 23-22 advantage. But an ace serve by Emma Wood ended the match.

The loss dropped Park Rapids to 1-1 in Mid-State Conference matches and 4-6 overall. The win lifted the Lakers to 2-4 on the season.
