Legion defeats BHV for first win

David Dirks blasted a home run and picked up the win as the Park Rapids American Legion baseball team posted its first victory of the season with a 9-5 win over Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale at Verndale on June 28.

Singles by Dirks, Danny Pike, Kyle Goplerud and Chris Goplerud gave the Legion a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Singles by Paul Prenevost and Cory Odland led to two more runs in the second before walks to Pike, Kyle Goplerud and Chris Goplerud and singles by Kody Walsh and Odland led to three runs in the fifth.

After Dirks' solo homer in the sixth, a single by Nick Belfiori and an RBI double by Odland concluded the scoring for Park Rapids in the seventh.

BHV scored four runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth.

Dirks was the winning pitcher while Pike earned the save. Odland led the offense by going 4 for 5.

Prior to that game, the Legion was 0-5 following a pair of losses to BHV on June 20 and a loss to Wadena on June 24.

In the first game of a doubleheader against BHV, Pike's two-run homer in the first and a single by Tanner Otterness and a double by Levi Erickson in the second gave the Legion a 5-0 lead before BHV rallied for a 10-5 win.

BHV scored one run in the third, three times in the fifth, three times in the sixth and twice in the seventh.

BHV completed the sweep with an 8-2 win in the second game by scoring three times in the first, once in the second and third innings, twice in the fourth and once in the fifth.

Chris Goplerud and Kyle Goplerud walked and scored on errors to produce Park Rapids' two runs in the fourth.

Wadena used a six-run sixth inning to seal a 12-3 win over Park Rapids on June 24.

The Legion scored twice in the first inning on a double by Odland and singles by Otterness, Chris Goplerud and Walsh. Singles by Odland and Otterness led to Park Rapids' other run in the second.

Wadena scored three times in the third, once in the fourth, twice in the fifth and seven times in the sixth to spark a 13-3 win over Park Rapids on June 30.

The Legion scored twice in the first and once in the second to build a 3-0 lead before Wadena rallied for the win.

Odland went 3 for 3 and scored twice while Otterness went 2 for 2 to lead Park Rapids' seven-hit attack. Pike took the loss.
