Panthers rally, eliminate Warriors from playoffs

Bonnie Baumgartner was tagged out trying to steal second base during Park Rapids' 7-6 win over Warroad in a Section 8AA playoff game Tuesday.

A four-run fourth inning helped the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team open the Section 8AA tournament with a 7-6 win over Warroad Tuesday at the Area High School field.

The No. 3-seeded Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Alyssa Carlson and Anna Grimes walked and scored on Bailee Jerger's two-out double.

After Warroad, the No. 6 seed, used four singles and an error to score three times in the third, the Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the inning on singles by Grimes and Ashley Domino and an error.

An error helped the Warriors score three times in the fourth to claim a 6-3 advantage before the Panthers responded by scoring the winning runs in the bottom of that inning.

Walks to Ashley Thelen and Lexi Burlingame and a single by Carlson started the inning. After a walk to Grimes and a grounder by Domino plated runs, Olivia Vaadeland's RBI single tied the game. Two more walks to Lauren Naeve and Caitlan Isaacson allowed the winning run to score.

Jerger preserved the lead by retiring nine of the final 11 batters she faced.

The Panthers were held to only six hits, but capitalized on 13 walks. Domino went 2 for 4 while Grimes scored three times as the Panthers improved to 16-5. Warroad's season came to an end with a 5-16 record.
