Odland's 15 strikeouts, Pike's homer spark Panthers to first wins of season

Danny Pike delivered a pitch during the first game of a Mid-State Conference doubleheader with Crosby-Ironton Tuesday.

Cory Odland's 15 strikeouts and Danny Pike's two-run home run sparked the Park Rapids baseball team to its first two wins of the season.

Odland gave up three hits and allowed seven walks in leading the Panthers to a 6-2 win over Pelican Rapids last Thursday.

Odland's RBI single and Pike's sacrifice fly gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the first before Odland's RBI double and Chris Goplerud's two-run double led to three runs in the fifth. Another RBI double by Odland concluded Park Rapids' scoring in the sixth.

Odland went 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBI while Goplerud went 2 for 4 to pace the Panthers' six-hit attack. The Panthers also benefited from nine walks as Pelican Rapids fell to 0-4 on the season.

The Panthers split a Mid-State Conference doubleheader with Crosby-Ironton Tuesday.

C-I scored three unearned runs in the eighth inning and held off the Panthers for a 10-9 victory in the first game before the Panthers salvaged the split when Pike's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth led to a 3-2 win.

In the opener, the Panthers trailed 7-4 entering the seventh when doubles by Odland and Goplerud, an error and a single by Dustin Martine tied the game.

After the Rangers used two errors to score three times in the eighth, the Panthers attempted a rally in the bottom of the inning. Sam Coborn singled and Odland walked to lead off the inning. A passed ball and an error allowed two runs to score, but the Rangers held on for the win.

Coborn went 2 for 4 with two RBI and Goplerud went 2 for 5 to lead the Panthers' eight-hit attack. Kyle Goplerud took the loss in relief of Pike. Those two pitchers gave up only four hits, but combined for nine walks and five hit batters.

Crosby-Ironton was in position to complete the sweep before Pike followed Chris Goplerud's one-out single in the sixth with his game-winning home run.

Levi Erickson singled and scored on Coborn's RBI single in the first to tie the game at 1-1 before C-I scored a run in the third to take a 2-1 lead.

Dustin Martine allowed only three hits and struck out four in a complete-game effort for the win. Chris Goplerud and Pike both went 2 for 3 as the Panthers managed only seven hits.
