Lehrke makes transition to D-I

Zach Lehrke scored two goals and had four assists in his first season as a member of the Minnesota State University, Mankato men's hockey team.

Zach Lehrke didn't produce many points in his first season at the Division I level as a member of the Minnesota State University, Mankato men's hockey team, but his points came at opportune moments.

Lehrke, who still holds the scoring record at Park Rapids with 113 goals and 212 points, tallied two goals and four assists on 42 shots in 28 games as a forward for the Mavericks. Mankato ended the season with an 8-16-4 record in WCHA play and a 14-18-6 overall mark.

Lehrke tallied his first collegiate point with an assist in a 3-2 win over Alaska-Anchorage on Oct. 29.

In back-to-back games against Massachusetts Lowell, Lehrke had two assists in an 8-2 win on Nov. 26 and followed with his first collegiate goal in a 3-2 win on Nov. 27.

Lehrke didn't score again until tallying an assist in a 5-1 win over No. 19-ranked Colorado College on Feb. 11.

In the WCHA playoffs, Lehrke scored a goal in Mankato's 4-2 loss to Denver on March 11. The Mavericks entered the WCHA playoffs as the No. 11 seed while Denver was the No. 2 seed and ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division I poll.

Before joining the Mavericks, Lehrke spent two seasons playing for Cedar Rapids of the USHL. Lehrke had 74 points in two seasons at Cedar Rapids, scoring five goals and tallying 11 assists in 45 games his first season and scoring 25 goals and tallying 33 assists in 58 games last season. Lehrke was 15th in the USHL in scoring with his 58 points last season. He also ranked second with seven game-winning goals.

In addition to being the Panthers' all-time leading scorer, Lehrke was a finalist for the 2008 Minnesota Mr. Hockey Award and was named to the All-State First Team his senior year when he set school records for goals (54) and points (99) and tied the school record for assists (45) in a season.
