Baumgartner, Pike win titles
Ben Baumgartner and Danny Pike claimed individual titles to lead the Park Rapids wrestling team at last Saturday's Mid-State Conference tournament at Detroit Lakes.
Baumgartner defeated Nate Francis of Detroit Lakes 12-5, pinned Devin Barthel of Wadena-Deer Creek in 2:11 and edged Blake Miller of Staples-Motley 7-5 to claim the title at 112 pounds. A takedown in the third period gave Baumgartner the win over Miller in the finals. Miller is ranked No. 10 at 112 in this week's state Class AA poll.
Pike received a first-round bye and advanced to the finals at 171 by pinning Detroit Lakes' Jordan Jones in 3:39. In the championship match, Pike trailed 3-1 in the third period before a takedown set up a pin at the 5:38 mark against Staples-Motley's Blake Petrich, who is rated No. 8 at 171 in this week's state Class AA poll.
Forrest Drury also reached the finals at 160 with a bye and a 9-8 decision over Staples-Motley's Gavin Kadlec. Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus' Christian Harrison held a 6-5 lead over Drury in the finals before a reversal led to a pin at the 4:32 mark.
Baumgartner, Pike and Brandon Ritter earned all-conference honors based on performances against Mid-State opponents this season while Drury was an all-conference honorable mention selection.
Also placing for the Panthers at the conference tournament were Zack Tretbar (third at 130), Zach Steffen (third at 140), Adam Branstrom (third at 145), Trai Schmidt (third at 285), Kevin Just (fourth at 152), Cole Tretbar (fourth at 189), Logan Schmaus (fourth at 215), Laine Jensen (fifth at 119) and Noah Schulz (fifth at 125).
Park Rapids finished fourth in the team standings with 132 points. Staples-Motley won the conference title with 187.50 points, followed by Wadena-Deer Creek with 174 and Detroit Lakes with 145.50. PLPRB finished fifth with 121 points and Crosby-Ironton was sixth with 63 points.
"I think our kids are wrestling OK as of now. I would like to see a little more consistency. It seems like we will have a good match and then two days later we look flat," said Park Rapids head coach Matt Clark. "We are getting down to section time and one good or bad day can make or break your season. Hopefully we can put it all together for the section tournament."
In addition to Baumgartner, Pike and Ritter, the other all-conference wrestlers were DL's Gabe Foltz at 103, DL's Zack Baker at 119, W-DC's Mitch Stephens at 119, S-M's Brady Killian at 125, S-M's Jordan Heldman at 130, C-I's Hayden Zillmer at 135, DL's Parker Jackson at 135, W-DC's Jared Wegscheid at 140, W-DC's Jacob Wegscheid at 145, PLPRB's Peter Harrison at 152, PLPRB's Christian Harrison at 160, Petrich at 171, S-M's Chandler Trout at 189, W-DC's Tony Reurink at 215 and W-DC's Dylan Anderson at 285. Zillmer was named the Mid-State Conference's Most Valuable Wrestler.
Joining Drury with all-conference honorable mention honors were PLPRB's Tristan Rubner at 103, Miller at 112, S-M's Josh Becker at 119, W-DC's Zach Bernu at 125, DL's Tony Sims at 125, PLPRB's Kyle Jordan at 130, S-M's Austin Redemske at 135, DL's Jarrett Nosal at 145, W-DC's Derrick Rude at 152, C-I's Jeremy Hammon at 189, DL's Bryce Dutton at 215 and S-M's David DeYonge at 285.

Wolverines hold off Panthers
A late rally fell short as Wadena-Deer Creek held on for a 39-29 Mid-State Conference victory over the Panthers last Thursday night at the Century School gym.
Baumgartner's pin at 112 pounds and Jensen's 6-1 minor decision at 119 gave the Panthers a 9-6 lead. Baumgartner led 21-6 before recording a fall at the 5:53 mark while Jensen used takedowns in each period to spark his win.
W-DC won the next six matches to claim a 33-9 lead before the Panthers rallied behind an 11-0 major decision by Drury at 160 and pins by Just at 171 and Pike at 189 to make it 33-25. Drury used a first-period takedown, a second-period nearfall, and an escape, takedown and nearfall in the third period for his win while Just and Pike recorded pins in the first period.
The Wolverines sealed the win with a pin at 215. Ritter ended the match with a 12-3 major decision at heavyweight. A takedown and nearfall in the first and third periods led Ritter to the win.
Park Rapids fell to 2-3 in conference matches and 9-10 overall.
