Patriots apply pressure in victory over Panthers
Pequot Lakes relied on full-court pressure and half-court traps the entire game to force 35 Park Rapids turnovers in a 94-28 Mid-State Conference girls basketball victory at the Area High School gym Tuesday night.
The full-court pressure resulted in eight consecutive layups, including five by Kylie Beltz, as the Patriots jumped out to a 19-0 lead with 13:22 to play in the first half.
A layup by Grace Bateman and a jumper by Lydia Lutz ended that run as the Panthers trailed 19-4 with 11:59 remaining in the first half.
Eight more layups followed as Pequot Lakes went on a 20-0 run to expand its lead to 39-4 with 7:38 to play.
Baskets by Carson Lee Christenson, Olivia Vaadeland and Ashley Domino kept the Panthers within 43-10 at the 6:05 mark before three more baskets by Beltz made it 53-11. Vaadeland scored off a rebound before the Patriots ended the half with a 15-1 run to claim a 68-14 lead at the break.
Pequot Lakes continued applying full-court pressure to open the second half en route to outscoring the Panthers 26-14.
Beltz led the Patriots with 26 points while Emily Lueck had 21 points and 11 assists. The win lifted Pequot Lakes to 2-0 in the conference and 6-0 overall.
Vaadeland led the Panthers with 7 points and 10 rebounds. Lutz grabbed eight rebounds and had three assists while Alyssa Carlson, Amber Booge and Christenson had two steals apiece as the Panthers fell to 0-3 in the conference and 0-5 overall.
