Division I prospects spark state champs past Panthers

Warroad's four Division I prospects combined for seven goals and eight assists as the defending state Class A champions opened the season with a 12-0 win over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team Tuesday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Layla Marvin, a senior who has committed to the University of North Dakota, scored five goals while senior Karley Sylvester, a senior who has signed with the University of Wisconsin, had three assists. Lisa Marvin (one goal, four assists) and Kayla Gardner (one goal, one assist) - two sophomores who have verbally committed to UND - also aided the Warriors' win.

Warroad jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first period behind two goals by Layla Marvin and goals by Hannah Johnston, Beth Olson and Megan Brettingen. The Warriors held a 20-5 edge in shots in the opening period.

Goals by Lisa Marvin, Gardner and Johnston pushed the lead to 8-0 after the second period. Warroad held a 20-3 edge in shots in that period.

The Warriors held a 17-4 edge in shots in the third period and used a goal by Maddie Egeland and three goals by Layla Marvin to complete the shutout.

Park Rapids goalie Bailey Moore made 32 saves while Shania Johnson made 13 saves as the Panthers fell to 0-2 on the season.
