Miller coasts to fifth women's title

Shelly Miller followed through on a putt on the No. 18 green during Sunday's final round of the Club Championship at Headwaters Country Club. Miller captured her fifth straight women's title.

For the fourth time in the last five years, Shelly Miller was able to coast down the stretch to win the women's club championship at Headwaters Country Club.

Miller shot an 87 during Saturday's first 18 holes to carry an 18-shot lead over Kim Rasmussen, a 19-shot lead over Jan Husby and a 23-stroke advantage over Peg Heeren into Sunday's final 18 holes.

Despite shooting a 93 Sunday, Miller was able to extend her lead, finishing with a two-day total of 180 and a 23-stroke advantage over Rasmussen, who fired a 98 for a two-day total of 203. Heeren finished third with a 214 while Husby was fourth with a 215.

Miller won her first club title in 2006 by 10 strokes and defended the title by 14 strokes in 2007. Miller was awarded the club title in 2008 when no other golfer participated. Last year, Stephanie Paulson was in contention until the end before Miller won her fourth title in a row by five strokes.

Opening Saturday's round with four pars and a 42 gave Miller an eight-shot lead over Rasmussen. A par on No. 17 and a birdie on No. 18 led to a 45 as Miller extended her advantage. Rasmussen shot a 55 on the back side for a 105 while Husby carded a 106 and Heeren shot a 110.

Rasmussen opened Sunday's first 18 holes with a 45 to cut into the lead as Miller opened with a 47. But Miller followed with a 46 on the back side for a 93 while Rasmussen's 53 on the back side led to a 98. Heeren shot a 104 Sunday while Husby carded a 109.

Sharon Paumen carded a 97 to win the women's senior title.

In flight play, Heeren's net 74 led the way while Rasmussen took second with a net 76 and Helen Rude was third with a net 77.
