Snurdbirds open playoffs with two wins

Midway advanced to the Lake and Pine League North Division championship game with a pair of amateur baseball victories last weekend.

The Snurdbirds defeated Blackduck 12-2 in seven innings last Saturday in the opening round before defeating Huntersville 7-0 Sunday at Midway.

Zach Etter threw a five-hitter and struck out 13 to lead Midway past Blackduck.

Midway scored three times in the first, second and seventh innings to win via the 10-run rule.

In addition to his compelte-game victory, Etter went 2 for 4 at the plate with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI. Brad Lusti went 2 for 4 with two runs and three RBI and Steve Wetterling went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Tony Meech hit a solo homer, Drew Rasmussen scored three times, Mike Baso and Pete Marjamaa also drove in a run each while Jake Lund, Marjamaa and Sean Dormanen scored the other runs.

Lund and Shane Hendrickson combined on a three-hitter to lead Midway past Huntersville.

Lund allowed two hits and struck out 10 over the first six innings before Hendrickson allowed one hit over the final three innings.

Etter led Midway's nine-hit attack by going 3 for 3 with a double and home run. Etter scored three times and drive in a pair. Baso went 2 for 4 with a run and Wetterling drove in two and scored a run. Marjamaa and Lusti scored the other runs as Midway improved to 22-4 on the season.

Blackduck and Huntersville will play today (Saturday) at 1:30 at Midway with the winner playing the Snurdbirds at 4 p.m.
