Tigers take fourth in 6A golf meet

Nevis and United North Central fell short in their quests to advance a golfer to the state Class A tournament.

The Tigers finished fourth at Tuesday's Section 6A boys golf tournament at Pebble Lake in Fergus Falls with a 355. Park Christian claimed the section title with a 347, two shots ahead of Mahnomen and four strokes ahead of Barnesville.

Leading the Tigers were Kyle Magnuson and Hunter Schroeder with 87s, Matt Halik with an 89 and Aaron Halik with a 92.

UNC had two section qualifiers: Tyler Meech and Lane Hillukka. Meech carded an 86 and Hillukka shot a 93.

Earning the five individual state berths were Frazee's Beau Hanson with a 71, Henning's Shane Winkler with a 75, Barnesville's Ryan LeNoue with an 80, and Frazee's Zach Ziegler and Battle Lake's Toby Curtis with 81s.

In the girls meet, Mahnomen won the section title with a 384 while Nevis finished fifth with a 490. UNC had an incomplete team.

Leading the Tigers were McKenzie Harris with a 108, Olivia Toft with a 119, Kara Rich with a 131 and Mattie Hjelseth with a 132.

Heather Brostrom's 109, Tasha Maninga's 113 and Ally Ohlgren's 135 led the Warriors.

Claiming the five individual state berths were Barnesville's Chelsey Halverson with a 91, Barnesville's Nikki Hammer and Ada-Borup's Brandy Wilkins with 92s, A-B's Hayley Wilkins with a 98 and Barnesville's Sami Hammer with a 100.

Tigers advance with a 351

Nevis qualified for the Section 6A tournament by carding a runner-up 351 at the North Section 6A tournament at Pebble Lake last Thursday.

Schroeder's third-place 83 and Magnuson's fourth-place 84 led the Tigers. Matt Halik's 89 and AJ Pappas' 95 rounded out Nevis' team score.

UNC tied for fourth place with a 361 behind Meech's 88 and Hillukka's 89. Meech was the third individual section qualifier while Hillukka claimed the seventh and final spot in a playoff. Frank Moren carded a 90 while 94s by Noah Hendrickson and Don Wurdock completed the Warriors' team score.

The girls didn't hold a subsection meet since all teams and individual golfers automatically qualified for the section tournament.
