Panthers end regular season with a 7-0 win

The Park Rapids boys tennis team ended the regular season in style with a 7-0 Mid-State Conference win over Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday afternoon at the Depot Courts.

In singles play, Alex Renner, Steve Smith, Armando Padilla and Kevin Merfeld combined to lose only nine games in four straight-set wins.

The Panthers' three doubles teams - Max Brown and Scott Smith at No. 1, Kyle Dickinson and James Kujawa at No. 2, and Jonah Pearson and Chris Shaw at No. 3 - also won in straight sets to complete the sweep.

Park Rapids, which edged W-DC 4-3 earlier in the season, posted its first 7-0 win of the season to improve to 3-9 in dual meets.

The Section 8A team tournament was rained out Monday and was held Tuesday at Thief River Falls. The Panthers received the No. 6 seed and opened play against No. 3 Crookston. Thief River Falls was seeded No. 1 and Detroit Lakes was seeded No. 2.

The individual tournament will conclude Thursday at Thief River Falls starting with the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. Renner is seeded No. 2 and Steve Smith is seeded No. 7 in singles. In doubles, the Brown/Scott Smith duo is seeded No. 8 while Kujawa and Dickinson are seeded No. 14.
