Nevis girls end regular season with conference victory over Blackduck

The Nevis girls basketball team closed out the regular season with a 44-31 Northwoods Conference win over Blackduck last Friday night at the Tiger Arena.

Riley Hanson (12), Becca Gunkel (9), Paige Walters (9), Bettsy Hjelseth (7) and Mandy Allman (7) led a balanced attack for the Tigers.

Nevis improved to 11-3 in the conference and 18-8 overall while Blackduck fell to 2-12 in conference play and 3-19 overall.

The Tigers received the No. 5 seed in the West and will open the Section 5A playoffs at No. 4 Pine River-Backus Thursday night at 7. The winner of that game advances to the West semifinals at Wadena next Saturday at 6. Bertha-Hewitt received the No. 1 seed, Sebeka was seeded No. 2 and Upsala received the No. 3 seed in the West.

The West championship game is set for March 9 at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined. Crosby will host the Section 5A title game on March 12.

Nevis is 2-1 against PR-B this season, winning 46-44 at the Walker Holiday Tournament, losing 48-38 at Nevis and winning 42-39 at Pine River. PR-B enters the tournament with an 18-7 record.

Trista Finck (16), Elizabeth Johnson (11) and Teresa Moenkedick (10) scored in double figures as Verndale snapped the Tigers' eight-game winning streak with a 47-46 win last Thursday.

Allman scored 20 points while Hjelseth (8) and Gunkel (6) combined for 14 more points for the Tigers in that loss.

Verndale, which led 27-23 at the half, improved to 4-18.
