Panthers dominate W-H-A in 13-0 win

Kyle Kanten and Sam Coborn had hat tricks and Ryan O'Mara recorded his fifth shutout of the season as the Park Rapids-Menahga boys hockey team defeated Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 13-0 Tuesday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Eight different players scored goals and 12 different players had assists as the Panthers improved to 6-1 in Mid-State Conference play, 6-2-1 against Section 8A opponents and 14-5-1 overall.

A five-goal first period set the tone for the Panthers, who defeated W-H-A 17-1 in the season opener. The Wolves have allowed at least 10 goals 11 times this season in falling to 0-14.

Kanten and Coborn assisted on Ian Johnson's goal at the 5:47 mark before Kanten set up Coborn 10 seconds later to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Kevin McMorrow and Coborn assisted on a power-play goal by Tucker Coborn at the 8:34 mark before Sam Coborn scored on a penalty shot at the 14:00 mark. Tucker Coborn received an assist on that goal. AJ May's assist on Jeff Sharp's goal at the 15:02 mark gave Park Rapids a 5-0 lead.

The Panthers dominated the first period, holding a 25-2 advantage in shots on goal. Park Rapids ended the game with a 56-8 edge in shots.

Five different players scored goals in the second period as the Panthers used a 17-4 edge in shots to build a 10-0 advantage.

Dan Ricke and Lucas Maves assisted on a goal by Sam Coborn 1:36 into the period before Sam Coborn set up Kanten 27 seconds later. Kanten then assisted on a goal by McMorrow 3:11 into the period for an 8-0 lead. After Sharp assisted on a goal by Cory Odland at the 9:37 mark, Tucker Coborn scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway at the 12:51 mark for a 10-0 cushion. Maves received an assist on that goal.

Park Rapids concluded the scoring as Kanten completed his hat trick with goals at the 6:00 and 9:42 marks of the third period and Frank Moren scored with 1:04 to play. Bailey Mueller, Kody Walsh and Johnson had assists on Kanten's goals while Zach O'Hern set up Moren's goal. The Panthers had a 14-2 advantage in shots in the third period.

O'Mara stopped all eight shots he faced to improve to 6-1 with five shutouts in his last seven games. O'Mara has allowed nine goals while making 121 saves during that span.

The Panthers hosted Lake of the Woods Friday night and will travel to Red Lake Falls next Thursday night in two more section games.
