Panthers pin BCLB, finish fifth

Danny Pike won all three of his matches as the Park Rapids wrestling team finished fifth at its annual invitational tournament Saturday at the Century School gym.

Luke Hartig's pin at 130 pounds and Pike's pin at 160 accounted for the Panthers' two wins in a 48-12 loss to Apple Valley in Saturday's first match. Apple Valley is rated No. 1 in the state Class AAA poll and No. 3 in the nation. Jordan Kingsley (No. 1 at 103), Matt Kelliher (No. 1 at 130), Daniel Woiwor (No. 5 at 125) and Jake Waste (No. 2 at 171) were the state-ranked wrestlers who won matches for Apple Valley, which also has six other wrestlers ranked in the state poll.

Park Rapids followed with a 43-34 loss to Mid-State Conference rival Wadena-Deer Creek. Ben Baumgartner opened with a pin at 103 before W-DC won the next six matches to build a 33-6 advantage.

The Panthers rallied behind a forfeit win by Zach Steffen at 145, a pin by Pike at 160, a 10-0 major decision by Jared Nash at 171 and a pin by John Drury at 189 to close the deficit to 37-28. Kenny Weaver ended the match with a pin at heavyweight.

In the fifth-place match, the Panthers relied on eight pins to defeat Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena 58-21.

Baumgartner at 103, Cameron Free at 119, Dylan Holmer at 125, Kevin Just at 152, Pike at 160, Nash at 171, Drury at 189 and Weaver at heavyweight had pins for Park Rapids.

Also winning matches for the Panthers were Michael Sandretzky at 112 (10-1) and Zac Haugland at 140 (forfeit).

Apple Valley defeated W-DC 56-6 in pool play and defeated Hibbing 63-12 in the title match. Hibbing defeated BCLB 75-0 and Lisbon 52-27 in pool play. Lisbon defeated BCLB 64-12 in pool play before losing to W-DC 42-24 in the third-place match.

Lisbon tops Panthers

Lisbon built a 34-3 lead and held on for a 34-31 victory over the Panthers in a dual meet Friday night at the Century School gym.

Holmer's 8-3 minor decision at 125 was the Panthers' only win in the first eight matches.

The Panthers ended the meet by winning the final six matches. Just started the run with a 12-3 major decision at 152 and Pike followed with a 13-0 major decision at 160.

After Nash received a forfeit win at 171, Drury recorded a pin at 189 and Brandon Ritter posted a 9-4 minor decision at 215. Weaver's pin at heavyweight ended the scoring as the Panthers' rally fell short.
