Tigers open section play with two easy home wins

Two easy victories enabled the Nevis volleyball team to live up to its No. 1 seed in the Northeast bracket of the Section 5A tournament.

The Tigers opened the section tournament with a 25-14, 25-15, 25-15 win over No. 4 Onamia last Friday night and followed with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-13 win over No. 3 Pillager Tuesday night at the Tiger Arena.

Nevis used 10 ace serves and 32 kills to spark the win over Onamia. Riley Hanson had four ace serves and 10 kills while Maggie Lindow led the team with 14 kills. Paige Walters served three aces, Bettsy Hjelseth had nine digs and Mandy Allman had 29 set assists.

In the win over Pillager, the Tigers took control midway through the first two games and at the start of the third game to advance to a section semifinal showdown with Barnum.

Pillager jumped out to a 6-0 lead in Game 1 before five kills and a block by Hanson and a kill by Annessa Feder tied the game at 10-10. A kill by Annie Albright, two kills by Lindow and two kills by Hanson helped Nevis close with a 15-5 run.

In Game 2, Pillager led 3-0 before two kills by Hanson, two kills by Walters and a dig by Albright gave the Tigers a 7-3 advantage. Hanson and Allman served aces and Lindow had three kills and a block as Nevis built a 21-13 lead. A kill by Walters, a block by Albright and a kill by Hanson helped close out the game.

Two kills by Hanson and a block by Lindow gave Nevis a 9-3 lead in Game 3. Pillager closed the margin to 14-10 before a kill and four service points by Lindow and two kills by Hanson made it 21-12. An ace serve by Walters and kills by Feder and Hanson ended the match.

The Tigers had 40 kills with Hanson's 19 and Lindow's 13 leading the way. Allman set up 34 of those kills. Lindow led the team with 11 digs and joined Walters with three ace serves.
