Kading, Carlson in hunt for state trip

Park Rapids' Mary Kading and Alyssa Carlson are one win away from returning to the state Class A girls tennis tournament.

The Panthers' top doubles team advanced to the Section 8A championship match by winning their first three matches at the Grand Forks Center Court Fitness Center.

Kading and Carlson, the No. 1 seed in doubles, opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 16-seeded Suzanne Coleman and Hannah Brenk of Perham Friday night.

A 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 9-seeded Bailey Mankie and Lilly Mankie of East Grand Forks in Saturday's quarterfinals and a 6-1, 6-0 victory over No. 5-seeded Zoe Pietras-Swanton and Katie Rook of Thief River Falls in the semifinals put the Park Rapids duo in the finals.

A true-second match was needed to determine the other state qualifier when Crookston's Rachel Lariviere and Jaclyn Proulx defeated Pietras-Swanton and Rook 7-5, 6-4 in the third-place match. The Panthers' other two section entrants were defeated in Friday's first round.

Bailey LaCoursiere, the No. 13 seed, was defeated by No. 4 Taylor MacFarlane of Roseau 6-0, 6-0. MacFarlane went on to finish third and earned a true-second match against East Grand Forks' Jessamy Jones Tuesday for a state berth.

Roseau repeats as champs

Roseau used a 6-1 win over Park Rapids and a 4-0 victory over East Grand Forks to repeat as the Section 8A team champion Friday.

Kading and Carlson were victorious at No. 1 doubles to account for the Panthers' only point in the semifinal match against Roseau, which defeated Park Rapids 6-1 during the regular season. No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles only played one set since the match was decided by that time. Park Rapids entered as the No. 5 seed while Roseau was the section's top seed.

The loss ended Park Rapids' season at 7-10. Roseau, which is rated No. 8 in the latest state Class A poll, will carry a 13-2 record to state. East Grand Forks edged Crookston 4-3 in the other semifinal match before losing to Roseau in the finals.

The state Class A team tournament begins Oct. 27-28 at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
