Midway stays alive in Region 16C tourney with win over Alexandria

Midway stayed alive in the Region 16C amateur baseball tournament by winning two of three games over the weekend.

The Snurdbirds opened the tournament with a 15-3 win over the Fergus Falls Hurricanes Saturday afternoon in Dent before dropping a 5-4 decision in 10 innings to the Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs Saturday night at Perham. Midway stayed alive in this double-elimination tournament by eliminating the Alexandria Senators 10-3 Sunday afternoon at Perham.

Drew Rasmussen, Jeff Marjamaa and Tony Meech all homered to spark Midway's 13-hit attack against Fergus Falls. Rasmussen went 3 for 5 with three runs and five RBI and Meech hit two homers and drove in four runs. Marjamaa also scored three times and had two RBI. Jake Lund went 2 for 4 with two RBI and Zach Etter went 2 for 5 with three runs scored. Midway scored seven times in the eighth inning to win via the 10-run rule. Brad Lusti went the distance for the win, striking out 11 and allowing three runs on seven hits.

Nate Meissner and Ryan Hendrickson hit home runs to spark Brandon-Evansville's 5-4 win. The Bluedogs scored twice in the 10th inning to remain undefeated. Midway was held to five hits in the loss. Etter and Marjamaa hit home runs with Etter scoring twice and driving in two. Brett Dormanen scored the other run. Brad Lusti took the loss in relief. Meech started and allowed one run on four hits over the first two innings. Etter gave up one run on one hit over five innings. Lund allowed one run on one hit over 2 1/3 innings before Lusti allowed two runs on three hits in the 10th. Those four pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts.

A seven-run sixth inning helped Midway eliminate Alexandria. Chris Baso went 3 for 5 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI and Marjamaa went 2 for 4 with two runs scored to pace the Snurdbirds. Etter, Lund, Brad Lusti, James Burkman, Travis Lusti and Brett Dormanen scored the other runs as Midway capitalized on four Alexandria errors. Brett Dormanen picked up the win by scattering 11 hits and allowing one earned run over nine innings as Midway improved to 21-12 on the season.

Midway will have a rematch with the Hurricanes Friday night at 8 at Perham. The winner of that game plays Wolf Lake Saturday night at 5 at Perham for a spot in the state Class C tournament. Brandon-Evansville won all three games over the weekend and has secured a state berth. The Region 16C championship game is set for Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at Perham.

Wolf Lake opened the Region 16C tournament with an 11-6 win over Alexandria and a 5-4 win over Dent Saturday before falling to Brandon-Evansville 12-2 Sunday.
