Park Rapids girls win subsection 8-29A title

Corey Hill couldn't have asked for a better performance by the Park Rapids girls track and field team at Thursday's Subsection 29-A meet at Mahnomen.

The Panthers earned 25 spots in the Section 8A meet this Saturday at Warren en route to winning the subsection title with 187 points. Bagley/Fosston was a distant second with 135 points while Nevis finished fourth with 74 points.

The Panthers won four events en route to repeating as subsection champs. Lydia Lutz, Sophie Shogren, Shelby Pierce and Victoria Lutz won the 4 x 800-meter relay with a time of 10:18.63. Grace Bateman won the 300 hurdles in 51.30. Lydia Lutz ran away from the field in the 3,200 run with a time of 12:06.33. Rachel Thelen took first in the pole vault by clearing 9 feet, 7 inches.

Park Rapids also qualified the three other relays with runner-up efforts. Shannon Taylor, Bateman, Mady Vaudrin and Thelen clocked a 52.36 in the 4 x 100 relay and a 1:50.44 in the 4 x 200 relay while Shogren, Mandy Schirmers, Pierce and Victoria Lutz clocked a 4:23.44 in the 4 x 400 relay.

Also adding runner-up finishes were Victoria Lutz in the 800 (2:27.54), Morgan Olson in the 3,200 run (13:03.75) and Heather Goodwater in the 100 hurdles (17.80).

The Panthers' other section qualifiers were Thelen in the 100 dash, Vaudrin in the 200 dash, Schirmers and Pierce in the 400 dash, Shogren in the 800 run and pole vault, Tiffany Deitchler and Katherine Erickson in the 1,600 run, Kaylee Hilmanowski in the 3,200 run, Shannon Thielen and Lexy Zunich-Andersen in the 100 hurdles, Tori Lauderbaugh in the 300 hurdles and high jump, and Nikki Knott in the shot put and discus.

Nevis earned 10 spots in the section field, led by three winning efforts.

Megan Stambaugh won the 400 dash in 1:03.30 and Annessa Feder took first in the high jump by clearing 5 feet. Those two joined Riley Hanson and Paige Walters on the winning 4 x 400 relay team that clocked a 4:18.86.

Kjera Gustafson took second in the discus with a toss of 91 feet.

Feder, Hanson, Maggie Lindow and Jessica Schunk also qualified in the 4 x 100 relay and Feder, Lindow, Walters and Hanson qualified in the 4 x 200 relay with third-place times.

The other section qualifiers were Schunk in the 100 dash, Walters in the 200 dash, Micah Yliniemi in the 100 hurdles and Lindow in the long jump.

"The hard work the kids have put in all season, especially over the past three weeks, has really paid off," said Nevis head coach Shelly Mahowald. "I am happy that most everyone who participated is advancing in some way. We know whatever happens next Saturday, we will have worked hard and done the very best we could do."

Field events at the section meet at Warren begin at 9:30.
