Lakers build early lead, eliminate Panthers from Section 8AA tournament
Detroit Lakes took control early in eliminating the Park Rapids wrestling team in the first round of the Section 8AA tournament Tuesday night.
The Lakers, the No. 4 seed in the south half of the section, won seven of the first eight matches in building a 31-5 lead and added three more victories en route to a 47-21 victory at the Century School gym.
Two pins in the first four matches helped give Detroit Lakes a 19-0 advantage.
Forrest Drury ended that run with a 16-0 technical fall in the 130-pound match. Drury led 2-0 after the first period, used a reversal and nearfall for a 7-0 lead after the second period, and ended the match at the 5:39 mark with a takedown and three nearfalls.
Three more victories pushed the Lakers' advantage to 31-5 before Park Rapids responded with back-to-back wins.
Matt Weaver built an 8-0 advantage with a pair of takedowns and a nearfall before recording a pin in the 152-pound bout before Jared Nash followed with a 12-3 major decision at 160. Nash led 4-0 after the first period with a takedown and nearfall and used a pair of takedowns to extend the lead to 8-3 after the second period before a takedown and nearfall sealed the win. Those two victories helped pull the No. 5-seeded Panthers to within 31-15.
Detroit Lakes sealed the victory by winning the next three matches, including two via pins.
Park Rapids heavyweight Kenny Weaver ended the meet with a pin at the 1:41 mark.
The loss ended the Panthers' dual-meet record at 9-16.
In Tuesday night's other matches at Park Rapids, No. 6 Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus edged No. 3 Little Falls 38-36, No. 1 Perham eliminated Detroit Lakes 61-9 and No. 2 Little Falls defeated PL/PRB 43-30.
The north half of the tournament was held at Thief River Falls Tuesday night where No. 4 Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena defeated No. 5 Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis 34-26, No. 3 Roseau defeated No. 6 East Grand Forks 41-20, No. 1 Thief River Falls routed BCLB 69-6 and Roseau eliminated No. 2 Fosston/Bagley 42-28.
Fosston hosted the section semifinals and finals Friday night.
Park Rapids will prepare for the Section 8AA individual tournament Feb. 27-28 at Cass Lake.
