Panthers stay perfect against section foes

Going into Tuesday night's match against Perham, head coach Stephanie Hanson said the Park Rapids volleyball team had to be consistent to prevail in this battle of Section 8AA teams.

"All the section teams are competitive," said Hanson before that match. "We're going to have to play well to beat them."

The Panthers did play well when it counted to remain undefeated against section foes following a 25-17, 13-25, 25-21, 25-22 victory at the Area High School gym.

Katelyn Weaver served a pair of aces and Kamree Carlson had a pair of kills as the Panthers jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start Set 1. An ace serve by Kendra Scholz, kills by Kaisa Coborn and Kayleah Breitweser, and a tip by Coborn gave Park Rapids a 14-8 advantage before kills by Scholz, Rilee Michaelson and Coborn made it 19-15. Coborn closed out the set with a kill and two ace serves.

Carlson served an ace and Michaelson and Coborn had kills as Park Rapids claimed a 7-5 lead in Set 2. Lily DeBoer served five points and Bradlyn Gniffke served seven points as the Yellowjackets took control with a 17-3 run for a 22-10 advantage. Michaelson had a kill and ace serve while Coborn had a winning tip for the Panthers during that run. Stella Raser had a pair of kills and two blocks as Perham took charge. After Scholz teamed with Carlson for a block and pounded down a kill to make it 22-13, Allie King served two aces as the Yellowjackets tied the match.

Two ace serves by Weaver and a pair of kills by Michaelson sparked the Panthers to a 6-1 lead in Set 3. A kill by Coborn, two kills by Michaelson and a tip by Weaver kept Park Rapids in front 12-11. Both teams battled through seven ties before Coborn served an ace and Carlson had a tip to give the Panthers a 22-19 edge. A kill by Carlson helped close out that set.

Weaver started Set 4 with another strong service game as a pair of kills by Michaelson staked the Panthers to a 7-0 lead. A kill by Michaelson and two kills by Coborn made it 10-2 before DeBoer served an ace and four points to cut the gap to 10-8. Kills by Michaelson and Coborn and a pair of kills by Carlson kept Park Rapids in front 14-13 before Perham took a 16-14 lead. Three straight kills by Michaelson tied the set at 18-18 before two kills and an ace serve by Coborn gave the Panthers a 21-19 advantage. Perham used a kill by Rachel Muer and and two kills by Raser to tie the set at 22-22 before a block by Scholz and Weaver and kills by Carlson and Michaelson ended the match.

The Panthers finished with 56 kills and 11 hitting errors with Coborn's 19 kills, Michaelson's 16 kills and Carlson's 14 kills leading the way. Park Rapids put 80 of 85 serves in play with 13 aces. Weaver served five aces and 18 points while Coborn served three aces and joined Carlson and Michaelson with seven points. Weaver had 41 set assists.

On defense, the Panthers had 95 digs with Carlson (22), Kora Just (20), Michaelson (18), Coborn (16) and Weaver (13) hitting double digits. Scholz and Weaver assisted on two blocks each.

The win lifted the Panthers to 8-0 against section opponents and 16-5 overall while Perham fell to 5-4 in section matches and 16-9 overall. Those two teams, along with Pequot Lakes (12-5) top the South half of the Section 8AA standings. In the North half, Roseau (13-8), Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (8-8) and Hawley (12-9) are the top teams.

Panthers finish 3-1 at Perham

The Panthers went undefeated in pool play before falling to Sauk Centre in the final round of the Perham tournament on Oct. 6.

Park Rapids won Pool B with a 2-0 (25-23, 25-15) win over Melrose, a 2-1 (25-15, 21-25, 15-7) win over Northern Freeze and a 2-1 (15-25, 25-22, 15-5) win over Hawley before falling to Sauk Centre 2-0 (25-22, 25-17) in the championship semifinals. Sauk Centre defeated Fosston 2-0 (25-19, 25-11) in the championship match.

Carlson's 12 kills, Michaelson's nine kills and two ace serves, Just's 16 digs, and Weaver's 23 set assists led the Panthers against Melrose, which fell to 16-8. The Panthers put 67 of 72 serves in play and had 28 kills with five hitting errors in that match.

Carlson had 13 kills and 12 digs while Coborn, Weaver and Michaelson served two aces each in the win over Northern Freeze. Weaver finished with 24 set assists. Park Rapids put 54 of 63 serves in play and had 30 kills with 10 hitting errors as Northern Freeze fell to 5-13.

Michaelson's 13 kills, Carlson's 12 kills and Weaver's 33 set assists helped the Panthers rally past Hawley. Park Rapids went 51 for 55 in serves while tallying 36 kills with 10 hitting errors. Defensively, Just (18), Coborn (10) and Carlson (10) hit double figures in digs. Hawley's record fell to 12-8.

Sauk Centre backed up its No. 7 ranking in the latest state Class AA poll by defeating the Panthers. Carlson and Michaelson both had seven kills as Park Rapids had 22 kills with 13 hitting errors. Michaelson served three aces as the Panthers put 39 of 40 serves in play and joined Carlson with 10 digs. Sauk Centre improved to 23-1 on the season.

"We keep allowing teams a chance. We realized that we can't get ourselves in positions where other teams have an opportunity to beat us. We were a little up and down, but we pulled it off (in pool play)," said Hanson. "We played really well against Sauk Centre. Sauk Centre was the better team, but they had to play well to beat us."
