Tigers, Panthers listed in state football polls

Opening the season with wins landed Nevis and Park Rapids in the first state football polls.

Nevis, which defeated Kittson County Central 36-21 in the season opener, was rated No. 4 in the initial state 9-man poll with 24 points. Defending state champion Spring Grove received four first-place votes and led the poll with 48 points while Stephen-Argyle followed with 28 points. Verndale, which received one first-place vote, was No. 3 with 27 points.

Following the Tigers were Grand Meadow at No. 5 with one first-place vote and 21 points, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at No. 6 with 19 points, Underwood at No. 7 with 18 points, Cromwell at No. 8 with 14 points, Cook County at No. 9 with 11 points and Houston at No. 10 with 10 points.

Also receiving points were Bertha-Hewitt (9), Lake of the Woods (9), Westbrook-Walnut Grove (9), Cleveland (8), Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal (8), Lanesboro (7), Ely (6), Mountain Lake Area (6), Goodridge-Grygla (6), Sleepy Eye-St. Mary's (6), South Ridge (6), Edgerton-Ellsworth (6), Hill City/Northland (5), Hills-Beaver Creek (6), Red Rock Central (4), Silver Bay (3), Mountain Iron-Buhl (3), Bigfork (3), Laporte (1) and Wheaton-Herman-Norcross (1).

Park Rapids opened the season with a dominating 46-0 win over United North Central and claimed the No. 20 spot in the first state Class AAA poll with 7 points. Three other Section 8AAA teams made the poll with Pequot Lakes at No. 5 with 28 points, Perham at No. 6 with 24 points and East Grand Forks at No. 11 with 12 points.

Rounding out the top 10 teams were Pierz at No. 1 with five first-place votes and 67 points, Rochester Lourdes at No. 2 with two first-place votes and 53 points, Jordan at No. 3 with 40 points, Fairmont at No. 4 with 35 points, Breck at No. 7 with 22 points, Proctor at No. 8 with 21 points, Glencoe-Silver Lake at No. 9 with 18 points and Jackson County Central at No. 10 with 14 points.

Also receiving points in the Class AAA poll were Annandale (11), Mora (11), Greenway-Coleraine/Nashwauk-Keewatin (10), Providence Academy-Heritage Christian Academy (9), Stewartville (9), Worthington (9), St. Peter (8), Rockford (8), Spectrum (7), Brooklyn Center (6), Cannon Falls (5), International Falls (3), Zumbrota-Mazeppa (2) and St. Croix Lutheran (1).

Detroit Lakes received 35 points for the No. 4 spot in the Class AAAA poll while Barnesville (No. 4 with 26 points), Breckenridge (No. 9 with 11 points), Roseau (No. 11 with 10 points), Warroad (No. 12 with 8 points), Frazee (No. 17 with 5 points), Pillager and Hawley (tied for No. 19 with 4 points), and Bagley (tied for No. 21 with 3 points) were listed in the Class AA poll. Mahnomen-Waubun (No. 5 with 24 points), Ada-Borup/Norman County West (No. 7 with 18 points) and Ottertail Central (No. 10 with 11 points) were rated in the state Class A poll.
