Panthers take 2nd, 3rd at Mid-State track meet

Park Rapids relied on depth to finish second in the boys meet and quality finishes to place third in the girls meet at Tuesday's Mid-State Conference track and field competition at Crosby.

The Panthers won two events and placed second in four events in compiling 160 points to trail Detroit Lakes' 211 points in the boys meet. In the girls meet, the Panthers won four events and placed second in four other events in compiling 134 points to trail Pequot Lakes' 199 points and Detroit Lakes' 174 points.

Seth Breitweser played a role in both of the Panthers' first-place showings, winning the 800-meter run in 2:06.05 and joining Kolby Brandt, Kaleb Stearns and Matthew Benson on the 4 x 800 relay team that took first in 8:35.38.

The Panthers also took second in the other relays as Josh Baker, Spencer Fritze, Zach Fritze and Josiah May clocked a 45.97 in the 4 x 100 race; May, Chris Day, Zach Fritze and Spencer Fritze clocked a 1:37.99 in the 4 x 200 event; and Brandt, Zach Fritze, Day and Benson clocked a 3:41.59 in the 4 x 400 relay.

Jake Reish took second in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 8 inches while Avery Wolff was third at 5-8. Also placing third for Park Rapids were Lane Monaghan in the 1,600 run (4:55.27), Bryce James in the 3,200 run (10:38.70), Reish in the long jump (18-2.50), and Damion Leon in the shot put (42-10) and discus (139-0.25).

"The boys really competed well. We had our best times of the year in all of our relays and were able to put in a lot of strong efforts in individual events as well," said Park Rapids head coach Andrew Lachowitzer. "We were able to place second as a team against strong competition, putting us in good position heading into subsections. I was very proud of our boys' effort."

Hannah Morgan and Jaiden McCollum led the Panthers to third place in the girls meet by playing a role in all four winning efforts.

Morgan won the 100 dash in 13.18 and McCollum took first in the shot put with a throw of 38-8. Morgan joined Kendra Scholz, Holly Johnson and Julia Johnson on the winning 4 x 100 relay team (51.89) while Morgan and McCollum joined Julia Johnson and Holly Johnson on the winning 4 x 200 relay unit (1:49.74).

Kamree Carlson, Holly Johnson, Julia Johnson and McCollum finished second in the 4 x 400 relay in 4:16.85 while Tori Hilmanowski, Morgan Koppelman, Jess Kaseman and Jada Renneberg finished second in the 4 x 800 relay in 10:24.83. Also placing second for the Panthers were Carlson in the 400 dash (1:04.37) and Scholz in the 300 hurdles (49.78).

Placing third for Park Rapids were Scholz in the 100 dash (13.40), Renneberg in the 3,200 run (12:30.80) and Jordan Klemmer in the pole vault (8-6).

The Panthers will compete in the Subsection 8-29A meet May 24 at Lake of the Woods.
