Wolves eliminate Tigers from Section 5A playoffs

Body:

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley forced 32 turnovers to eliminate the Nevis girls basketball team from the Section 5A North playoffs with an 80-35 win at Walker on March 1.

Ashley Pyburn led the No. 7-seeded Tigers with 12 points, eight steals and seven rebounds. Ava Isaacson (7) and Katie Kamphaus (6) combined for 13 points with Isaacson leading the way with nine rebounds while adding four steals. Madison Neyens and Kia Heide dished out two assists each as the Tigers end the season with a 10-18 record.

The Wolves, the No. 2 seed in the North, improved to 24-5. W-H-A defeated the Tigers 70-26 and 66-19 during the regular season.

"We struggled against a very good basketball team. We didn't shoot well at all. We wanted to shoot a lot of 3s and hope somebody got hot. Unfortunately, we didn't make one 3-pointer all night and we turned the ball over too much," said Nevis head coach Bradley Neyens, whose team missed all 15 3-point attempts. "I'm proud of the way my girls fought. It just wasn't our night. That being said, our future is bright. We have a young team with a lot of talent and if we keep working hard, we will keep improving. Getting to 10 wins was a team goal and we accomplished that. We plan on more wins in the future."
