Cromwell tops Tigers in key section game
Micah Pocernich hit five 3-pointers and scored 24 points in leading Cromwell-Wright to a 55-49 overtime victory over the Nevis boys basketball team in a battle of the top teams in the Section 5A North standings Friday night at the Tiger Arena.
Cameron Calhoon added 12 points and five blocked shots while Jaden Gronner scored 10 points for the Cardinals, who trailed 27-23 at the half. The win lifted Cromwell to 4-0 against section teams and 18-6 overall.
Jack Landquist's 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals and Michael Landquist's 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals led the Tigers. Tom Wormley also hit double figures with 10 points and hauled down five rebounds while Luke DeWulf had three assists and Zach Henry had three steals. The loss dropped Nevis to 10-2 in section games and 20-4 overall.
"In a crucial game in terms of subsection seeding, we were unable to execute when we needed to and really let Cromwell steal one from us," said Nevis head coach Scott Kramer. "We led by double figures at times, but our lack of free-throw shooting and execution allowed them to climb back into the game. We definitely had opportunities to win the game on both ends, be it scoring opportunities or defensive stops, but we just didn't make the plays when we needed to."
