Panthers receive No. 8 seed for section wrestling tourney
Park Rapids received the No. 8 seed and will open Saturday's Section 8AA wrestling tournament by facing No. 9 Fergus Falls at 11 a.m. at Thief River Falls.
The Panthers enter this first-round match with a 9-13 record while Fergus Falls is 3-16. The winner of that match wrestles No. 1 Perham (24-1) at 12:30 p.m. in a quarterfinal match.
In Saturday's other first-round match at 11 a.m., No. 7 United Clay Becker (8-12) faces No. 10 Sauk Centre/Melrose (4-18) with the winner wrestling No. 2 Detroit Lakes (18-5) in the quarterfinals. The other quarterfinals pit No. 3 Pierz (21-9) against No. 6 Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus (18-12) and No. 4 Thief River Falls (12-9) against No. 5 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (18-5).
The semifinals will follow at 2:30 p.m. with the section championship match set for 4:30 p.m.
Perham (No. 4), Detroit Lakes (No. 15), Pierz (No. 19) and Thief River Falls (No. 22) are rated in the latest state Class AA poll.
Thief River Falls will also host the Section 8A team tournament this Saturday (Feb. 17).
United North Central (6-15) received the No. 6 seed and will wrestle No. 3 Fosston/Bagley (16-6) at 12:30 p.m. in a quarterfinal match. The winner of that match faces the winner between No. 2 Badger-Greenbush-Middle River (14-8) and No. 7 Fertile-Beltrami (4-10).
No. 8 Mahnomen/Waubun (3-17) wrestles No. 9 Red Lake County Central (0-15) in a first-round match at 11 a.m. with that winner facing No. 1 Frazee (19-7) in the quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m. In the other quarterfinal match, No. 4 Crookston (11-4) faces No. 5 Roseau (7-10).
The semifinals will follow at 2:30 p.m. with the championship match set for 4:30 p.m.
In the latest state Class A poll, Frazee is rated No. 2, BGMR is rated No. 16 and Fosston/Bagley is rated No. 17.
