Carrier's two free throws give Tigers 42-40 victory

Tori Carrier hit two free throws with :01 remaining to give the Nevis girls basketball team a 42-40 Northwoods Conference win over Blackduck Friday night at the Tiger Arena.

Carrier hit a 3-pointer and Madison Neyens hit a baseline jumper to give the Tigers a 40-38 lead before Blackduck tied the game. After the Tigers forced a 5-second call on Blackduck, Carrier was fouled and hit both free throws to give Nevis the win.

Katie Kamphaus (9), Carrier (8), Kia Heide (6) and Kali Oelschlager (6) combined for 29 points for the Tigers. Ava Isaacson grabbed six rebounds while Annalise Ahrendt, Heide, Carrier, Oelschlager and Kamphaus had five rebounds apiece. Ashley Pybun dished out three assists while Isaacson and Carrier had four steals each for Nevis, which won despite turning the ball over 26 times.

Nevis, which edged the Drakes 41-39 in the season opener on Nov. 28, improved to 5-8 in the conference and 7-13 overall. Blackduck fell to 2-12 in conference games and 3-19 overall.

"What a game. Fortunately we came out on top," said Nevis head coach Bradley Neyens. "It was the most exciting last three minutes that I have coached. The crowd was electric and everybody was jacked up. The team never gave up and picked each other up. It was a team win."

Park Christian tops Tigers

Park Christian jumped out to a 41-16 halftime lead in posting a 68-44 win over the Tigers Thursday night at Moorhead.

Karley Motschenbacher scored 19 points to lead the Falcons, who improved to 19-4.

Kamphaus (11) and Carrier (9) combined for 20 points for the Tigers, who turned the ball over 26 times in the game. Heide hauled down six rebounds, Isaacson and Pyburn had two assists each, and Carrier and Kamphaus had two steals each.

"We came out flat in the first half. They outhustled us and outrebounded us in the first half," said Neyens, whose team outscored Park Christian 28-27 in the second half. "I was really proud of the way we played in the second half. We came out and played great defense, rebounded extremely well and knocked down some shots. This is the way we are capable of playing and the girls are starting to realize it."

Wolves run past Tigers

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley jumped out to a 44-12 halftime lead in coasting to a 66-19 conference win over Nevis on Feb. 2 at the Tiger Arena.

Isaacson and Carrier combined for 12 points, Isaacson and Ahrendt had five rebounds each, and Pyburn had four steals and two assists to lead the Tigers. Nevis just only 22 percent from the field (7 for 32, including going 1 for 15 on 3-pointers) and had 28 turnovers.

The Wolves, who defeated Nevis 70-26 at Walker on Jan. 9, are now 10-2 in the conference and 19-4 overall. W-H-A and Red Lake (9-1) sit atop the conference standings.

"We just didn't play well. There is something about playing this team that gets us flustered," said Neyens. "They are one heck of a basketball team. They are long, can shoot from inside and outside, and play good half-court defense."
