Strong second half lifts Braves by BBE

Three pivotal spurts sparked the Menahga girls basketball team to a 65-39 win over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in a Section 5A clash at Menahga on Dec. 2.

The Braves used a 12-3 run late in the first half, a 16-0 run early in the second half and a 12-0 run midway through the second half to spark the win.

Three inside baskets by Macie Kirckof gave B-B-E an 8-4 lead at the 15:05 mark of the first half before two layups by Megan Hendrickson, a layup by Tara Hendrickson, a 3-pointer by Cierra Ahlf, and a basket off a rebound by Tara Hendrickson gave Menahga a 19-17 lead at the 6:31 mark.

Ahlf's layup, jumper and 3-pointer and a 3-pointer by Alyssa Peterson sparked a 12-3 run as Menahga carried a 31-24 lead into the intermission.

A layup, two jumpers and three-point play by Peterson, a 3-pointer and jumper by Ahlf, and a layup by Megan Hendrickson ignited a 16-0 run as the Braves extended their advantage to 47-26 with 12:46 to play.

A 3-pointer by Jacqueline Gossen ended that run, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Peterson, a 3-pointer by Ahlf and a layup by Megan Hendrickson pushed the lead to 59-30 with 10:21 remaining.

A 3-pointer by Grace Illies with 8:36 remaining ended that run as the Braves coasted the rest of the way.

Peterson scored 22 points, Ahlf had 21 points and Megan Hendrickson finished with 11 points to lead the Braves' offense. Megan Hendrickson, Ahlf and Tara Hendrickson all pulled down eight rebounds while Leah Schwartz had three steals.

The Jaguars fell to 1-1 with the loss.

Braves defeat Henning in conference opener

Alyssa Peterson's 27 points, six steals and five rebounds sparked the Braves to a 67-41 win over Henning Tuesday night in the Park Region Conference opener for both teams.

Megan Hendrickson added 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists while Tara Hendrickson pulled down six rebounds as the Braves improved to 3-0 on the season.
