Bad inning knocks Midway out of state tournament
Four straight RBI singles sparked a six-run third inning that led Faribault to a 6-4 win over Midway in the second round of the state Class C amateur baseball tournament at Green Isle on Aug. 26.
Blake Langerud, Christian VonRuden, Joey Grote and Matt Lane had consecutive RBI singles as the Lakers used six hits in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. Bertha draftee Patrick Riewer took over for Midway starter Jake Lund and pitched 7 ⅔ innings of four-hit, shutout relief to keep the Snurdbirds in the game.
Midway battled back by scoring twice in the third and single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. But Faribault starter Matt Lane (who allowed 13 baserunners on 10 hits, two hit batters and one walk) pitched out of trouble all night for the complete-game victory.
Seven of Midway's hits were produced by the top of the order as Drew Rasmussen (1 for 5 with a run), Chris Baso (1 for 4 with two runs), Zach Etter (3 for 4 with a run) and Steve Wetterling (2 for 5 with three RBI) led the way. Mike Baso went 1 for 4 and Brett Dormanen went 2 for 4 (including a leadoff double in the fourth for the Snurdbirds' only extra-base hit) to round out Midway's offensive attack.
Lund started and gave up five unearned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three over the first 1 ⅔ innings before Riewer took over and walked three while striking out six. Riewer coaxed a 1-2-3 double play in the eighth inning to keep the Lakers from putting the game away.
Lane struck out nine as Faribault, the Region 3C runner-up which opened the state tournament with a 9-1 win over Gibbon, advanced to the Round of 16.
Midway, the Region 14C champions, end the season with a 19-6 record.
