Midway wins Region 14C title, advances to state tournament

Midway is headed back to the state Class C amateur baseball tournament.

The Snurdbirds earned an automatic state berth by advancing to the Region 14C championship game with a 7-1 win over Detroit Lakes Saturday afternoon at Perham. Midway was awarded the region title when Sunday's championship game against New York Mills was rained out. Both Midway and New York Mills qualify for state. Midway went 3-0 in region play to earn the team's first region title since winning the Region 16C championship in 2008.

Jake Lund and Zach Etter combined on a four-hitter and were supported by a 10-hit offensive attack in leading Midway past the Angels in a battle of the region tournament's two undefeated teams.

Midway took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning before Detroit Lakes scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth. Midway sealed the win by scoring once in the fourth, twice in the fifth and twice in the seventh.

Lund went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Steve Wetterling went 2 for 5 with two runs and three RBI (including a solo home run in the seventh), Chris Baso went 2 for 3 with two runs and Brett Dormanen went 1 for 2 with two RBI to lead the Snurdbirds' offense. Drew Rasmussen (1 for 5), Zach Etter (one run), Mike Baso (one RBI), Sean Dormanen (one run) and Bobby Lusti (1 for 4, one RBI) also aided Midway's cause.

Lund picked up the win, allowing one unearned run on three hits and three walks while striking out nine over the first seven innings. Etter gave up one hit and struck out three over the final two innings.

In the three region games, Lund went 2-0 with a 0.41 ERA and went 4 for 7 at the plate to earn Region 14C MVP honors. Lund threw 22 innings, allowing 13 hits and four runs (one earned) with seven walks and 30 strikeouts.

Leading Midway's offense this summer have been Rasmussen (.402 average, 19 runs, 14 RBI), Chris Baso (.395 average, 23 runs, 16 RBI), Etter (.347 average, 13 runs, six RBI), Lund (.327 average, eight runs, nine RBI), Mike Baso (.317 average, nine runs, 12 RBI), Brett Dormanen (.317 average, 10 runs, 13 RBI), Cory Odland (.300 average, 12 runs, five RBI), Wetterling (.283 average, 11 runs, 10 RBI), Ray Mueller (.274 average, 12 runs, 11 RBI), Alex White (.265 average), Sean Dormanen (.200 average) and Stetson Burkman (.195 average).

On the mound, Lund has led the way with a 7-1 record, one save and a 1.10 ERA with 100 strikeouts in 65.1 innings. Odland is 3-1 with a 3.29 ERA in 27.1 innings of work while Burkman is 2-2 with a 4.02 ERA in 56 innings. Etter has a 2.63 ERA in 13.2 innings while Bobby Lusti (2-0), Brett Dormanen (2-0) and Sean Dormanen (1-1) have been involved in decisions.

Midway is making its 19th trip to state. The Snurdbirds drafted Perham's Jack Stigman, Bertha's Patrick Riewer and Staples' Jalen Busker for the state tournament.

The Snurdbirds will carry a 19-5 record into their state opener against either Faribault or Gibbon on Saturday (Aug. 26) at 5 p.m. at Green Isle. With a win, Midway will play at Norwood at 7:30 p.m on Sept. 2. The 48-team, single-elimination tournament concludes Sept. 4 at Green Isle.
