Lund shuts out W-DC in Region 14C playoffs
Jake Lund outdueled Travis George as Midway remained undefeated in the Region 14C amateur baseball playoffs.
Lund threw a five-hitter and struck out 13 in leading the Snurdbirds to a 4-0 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek at Perham on Aug. 5.
After a three-hour rain delay, W-DC threatened to take the early lead. The Shockers left the bases loaded in the first inning and left runners on second and third in the third. Lund recorded a strikeout to end the first and induced two grounders to end the third to keep the game scoreless.
Midway took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. Bobby Lusti and Drew Rasmussen singled with two outs before Chris Baso followed with a two-run double. Zach Etter followed with an RBI double to give Lund all the offensive support he would need.
Sean Dormanen scored on Ray Mueller's sacrifice fly in the eighth to conclude the scoring.
Midway belted out 14 hits with Rasmussen (3 for 5), Brett Dormanen (3 for 4) and Lusti (2 for 3) leading the way. Mike Baso, Sean Dormanen, Lund and Robert Weaver also contributed singles to the Snurdbirds' cause.
Lund walked four, but left 11 W-DC runners on base. George also went the distance, walking two and striking out three while being aided by three double-play grounders.
In the other winners' bracket game, Detroit Lakes edged New York Mills 8-5 on Aug. 6. Midway, which improved to 18-5, will play Detroit Lakes at noon on Aug. 12 at Perham.
