Snurdbirds open region play with dramatic win
Back-to-back solo home runs by Chris Baso and Zach Etter with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning rallied Midway to a 4-3 win over Perham in a Region 14C amateur baseball playoff game July 30 at Deer Creek.
Baso faced a 1-2 count before blasting a pitch over the left-field fence to tie the game. Etter followed with a similar blast to give the Snurdbirds the walk-off win.
Sacrifice flies by Jack Stigman and Gavin Biegler gave the Pirates a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning before Midway cut the gap to 3-2 in the seventh when Cory Odland was hit by a pitch and scored on an error.
That set up the Snurdbirds' dramatic finish.
Bobby Lusti earned the win in relief by throwing three scoreless innings and allowing only one baserunner on an error. Jake Lund started and allowed three runs on six hits and three hit batters while striking out nine. Lund pitched into the seventh inning.
Midway will carry a 17-5 overall record into tonight's (Saturday's) game against Wadena-Deer Creek at Perham. The loser of that game plays at 11 a.m. Sunday while the winner plays at 5 p.m. Sunday at Perham.
