Legion opens season with pair of losses
Wadena-Deer Creek shut down the offense of the Park Rapids American Legion baseball team with a pair of shutouts Monday night at Park Rapids.
Park Rapids managed only four hits in the doubleheader, dropping the first game 13-0 in six innings and the second game 1-0 in five innings in the season openers.
Gabe Bagstad's single with two outs in the second and Ty Karger's lead-off single in the sixth provided the only hits for Park Rapids. Sam Eystad reached on an error in the fourth and Austin Jerger walked in the sixth to account for Park Rapids' other baserunners.
W-DC scored twice in the second, once in the third, five times in the fourth and five times in the sixth to end this game early via the 10-run rule.
Jake Dykhoff went the distance for W-DC, striking out 10 over six innings. Eystad (six runs on seven hits over three innings) started and took the loss. Jack Herman (two runs on three hits in one inning), Zach Hocking (five runs on five hits in 1.2 innings) and Brendan Kruchowski (who struck out the only batter he faced in the sixth) finished up. Those four pitchers combined to give up 15 hits and four walks while striking out three.
W-DC completed the sweep by scoring the game's only run in the first inning.
Bagstad went the distance for Park Rapids, throwing a five-hitter. Park Rapids was held to only two hits in that game.
Park Rapids will host Sebeka on June 21, Staples-Motley on June 23 and Walker on June 26 and will travel to Staples-Motley on June 30, Walker on July 5 and Wadena on July 7. All games are doubleheaders starting at 5 p.m. and feature a seven-inning game followed by a five-inning game.
The league playoffs will be held July 10, July 12 and July 14 with the district tournament following on July 20-23.
