18U softball team begins league play with a sweep

Brooke Jerger and Rilee Michaelson combined to give up only two hits and two runs as the Park Rapids 18U fastpitch softball team opened Prairies Lakes League play with a doubleheader sweep at Pelican Rapids on June 6.

Jerger threw a one-hitter and struck out 11 as Park Rapids won the opener 15-1 in six innings while Michaelson followed with a one-hitter with seven strikeouts as Park Rapids completed the sweep with a 7-1 victory in the second game.

Park Rapids made its league debut by using a nine-run sixth inning to seal the victory in the opener. Park Rapids scored twice in the first before adding on single runs in each of the next four innings.

Tara Johanning had three hits and two RBI, Michaelson had two hits and three RBI and Kora Just had two hits to pace Park Rapids' 12-hit attack.

In the second game, Park Rapids scored four times in the second, twice in the fourth and once in the sixth to complete the sweep.

Johanning and Just had two hits and an RBI each, Jerger had two hits and Michaelson had an RBI as Park Rapids finished with 13 hits.

Park Rapids, which had Tuesday night's games at Perham postponed, travels to Waubun for a doubleheader on June 20. Park Rapids concludes the regular season with road games at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on June 27, at Detroit Lakes on July 6 and at Frazee on July 11. Hawley will host the league tournament beginning on July 17.
