Team effort leads Panthers to state

Corey Hill knew it would take contributions from every athlete for the Park Rapids girls track and field team to win the Section 8A True Team title Tuesday at Vern Weekley Field.

It was truly a total team effort that helped the Panthers repeat as the section True Team champions.

Despite winning only two events, Park Rapids relied on a balanced attack to top the 17-team field with 966 points. Roseau was second with 931 points and Crookston took third with 925.50 points in this meet that has each team enter one relay team and two individuals in the other events with every finisher scoring points. The winning relay teams earned 51 points while the winning individuals received 34 points.

"We liked our chances going into the meet. With that said, we knew there would be no chances for error. There were five teams going in that we knew had a realistic chance of winning this meet, so we knew we would have to work hard and perform well," said Hill. "The girls accepted the challenge and really gave it their best. We had several girls get personal bests and that helped us a lot. This was not easy as the competition was amazing and they really brought their 'A' game."

The Panthers opened the running events with Kayleah Breitweser, Tori Hilmanowski, Paige Johnson and Lydia Kantonen winning the 4 x 800-meter relay in 10:27.27 while Kantonen ended the individual running events by winning the 3,200 run in 12:03.02.

Adding individual runner-up showings for the Panthers were Johnson in the high jump by clearing 5 feet and Jaiden McCollum with a toss of 38-8 in the shot put. The 4 x 200 relay team of Kendra Scholz, Abby Eystad, Julia Johnson and Ellie Ulvin (1:55.57) and the 4 x 400 relay team of Kamree Carlson, Ulvin, Hilmanowski and McCollum (4:21.84) also took second.

Hilmanowski took third in the 800 run in 2:34.99 and Carlson finished third in the shot put with a toss of 36-1. The 4 x 100 relay team of Hannah Morgan, Eystad, Julia Johnson and Ulvin finished third in 54.36. Placing fourth were Renneberg in the 3,200 run (12:49.03), Caroline Drury in the pole vault (8-6), Katelyn Warmbold in the long jump (15-2) and McCollum in the discus (98-6).

Morgan in the 100 dash (13.61), Kennedy Carlson in the high jump (4-8) and Warmbold in the triple jump (31-5.50) took fifth.

The Panthers advance to compete in the state Class A True Team meet May 20 at Stillwater. Park Rapids finished sixth at state last season.

"As for our chances at state, we will dream big and pursue our biggest dreams. We already completed a goal and are now one of the best nine teams in the state. Now we'll see how far up we can climb," said Hill. "We know that there are several great teams down there. We also know from experience that when you go down to state, you can throw all the times and distances out the window and it simply comes down to heart and who shows up. When you look at it that way, I like our chances to finish in the top-three and bring home a trophy for the first time. I can promise you we will give it our all and leave it all on the track."
