Two solid rounds help Fisher defend women’s club title

Sue Fisher chipped onto the No. 7 green during Sunday’s final round of the Club Championship at HCC. Fisher carded a 166 to defend her women’s title.

For the second year in a row, Sue Fisher edged Shelly Miller to win the women’s title at Sunday’s Club Championship at Headwaters Country Club.

Last season, Fisher carded an 84 to claim a five-stroke lead after the first day and ended up topping Miller by three strokes.

This year, Fisher opened with another 84, but trailed by three strokes after the first day and needed a late rally to defend her title.

Miller was in position to capture her seventh women’s club title by opening Saturday’s first 18 holes with an 81. Miller carded pars on No. 2, No. 4, No. 5, No. 7, No. 8 and No. 9 for a 39 on the front side and followed with pars on No. 10, No. 11, No. 13 and No. 16 for a 42 on the back side.

Fisher was three shots back after opening with an 84. Pars on No. 3, No. 7 and No. 8 sparked a 42 on the front side while pars on No. 11, No. 13, No. 15 and No. 17 led to another 42 on the back side.

Sharon Paumen (who had a birdie on No. 2 and pars on No. 11, No. 13, No. 15, No. 16 and No. 17) joined Maggie Winchell with 89s while Barb Fischer was fifth with a 91 after Saturday’s play.

Pars on No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 helped Fisher gain a share of the lead. Miller regained the lead with a par on No. 7 and used a par on No. 9 for a 43 on the front side. Fisher closed the front side with pars on No. 8 and No. 9 for a 40 to tie Miller for the lead. Paumen fell nine shots back after carding a 44.

Fisher took the lead with a par on No. 11, but after both leaders carded pars on No. 12, Miller regained a share of the lead with a par on No. 13 and took the lead with a bogey on No. 15.

After Fisher used a par on No. 16 to tie Miller, both golfers bogeyed No. 17 before Fisher used a par on the final hole (her 16th par of the tournament) to defend her title with an 82 and two-day total of 166.

Miller’s double-bogey on No. 18 led to a 44 on the back side and a two-day total of 168. Fischer used an 85 on Sunday to climb into third place with a 176 while Paumen finished with an 89 Sunday for a 178. Winchell was fifth with a 186.

Fisher also won her first senior title with her 82 on Sunday. Fischer won the First Flight with a net 68.
