Solid pitching has sparked the Park Rapids American Legion baseball team to a 5-0 record so far this summer.

The Legion opened the season with a 6-5 win over Staples on June 11. Drew Bade went the distance, scattering 10 hits and striking out eight in seven innings. Chris Goplerud went 2 for 4 with the game-winning RBI while David Dirks and Cody Brumbaugh each went 2 for 3.

Dirks threw a four-hitter and struck out four in leading the Legion to a 16-3 five-inning win at Bertha on June 17. Bade and Cory Gartner both went 2 for 3 to lead Park Rapids’ offense.

Gartner followed with a two-hit shutout as the Legion blanked Staples 3-0 on June 18. Paul Prenevost went 1 for 3 with two RBI and Chris Goplerud went 1 for 4 with an RBI.

A 10-run second inning lifted the Legion to a 13-1 five-inning victory over Blackduck on Monday. Tyler McCollum’s RBI bunt single, Zach Eystad’s two-run single, Dirks’ two-run single and an RBI triple by Rilee Johnson were the key hits in the second inning, which also featured two Blackduck errors, four walks and a hit batter. Kyle Goplerud’s RBI single in the third and a double by Dirks and Johnson’s RBI single in the fourth concluded the scoring. McCollum threw a five-hitter with four strikeouts over five innings for the win.

Gartner threw a one-hitter and struck out 14 in seven innings as the Legion blanked Wadena 5-0 on Tuesday. Kyle Goplerud’s two-run single in the third and Johnson’s RBI double in the fifth led the Legion’s five-hit attack. Park Rapids took advantage of three Wadena errors and seven walks.

The Legion will travel to Blackduck Monday and will host Sebeka Tuesday at 5:30.
