A pileated woodpecker rests on a snap in Lakewood Township, Minn. Pileated woodpeckers are considered more abundant in the state now than they were in the early 1900s, and the big bird seems to be doing well across the region. Observers for the bird atlas survey reported 2,393 pileated Woodpecker records. Nests were confirmed in 118 different locations across 37 counties. Bob King / Forum News Service
