Hundreds gathered on Spirit Lake Saturday for the annual Menahga Fishing Derby.

Despite frigid temperatures, young and old attended the annual social gathering to wait for a fish to bite or eat food purchased from the Cub Scouts.

People stayed for the door prizes even if they didn't catch a fish. Exercise was part of the derby as people ran up to the announcer to get door prizes for being the youngest on the ice, having a certain type of key ring or some other item with them.

Prizes were also awarded for different categories of fish. Turkeys were awarded for the first 25 fish brought to the judge's stand and some received cash prizes or other items.

Organizers said the fishing seemed to be better than last year overall.

The annual winter fishing derby is hosted by the Menahga Civic & Commerce Association.
