Floating rafts need permits

A permit is required for floating swim rafts that remain on the lake overnight.

According to DNR Boat and Water safety rule 6110.1800, anyone putting out a floating raft or boatlift that does not extend from shore must get a permit if they are left overnight.

The structures must also have a light or reflective material attached and visible in all directions. Permits are not needed for rafts left out only during the day or for boatlifts touching the shore.

The permits are available at the sheriff's office through a simple, one-time process.

Sheriff Cory Aukes reports Boat and Water officers are seeing a number of rafts on area lakes without the permit. This is an effort to get more in compliance, he said.
