Two area taxidermists won awards at a Minnesota Taxidermy Guild competition and exhibition in Rochester April 12-15.

Mike Whiteside of Woods & Waters Taxidermy entered five pieces in the professional division. He won second place for a life-size professional small mammal beaver. Bonus points were given for difficulty and providing reference of a custom molded tail. He won second place for a professional reproduction fish with bluegill. Bonus points were given for the difficulty of the fish attachment to the base.

Whiteside also won third place for two professional wall mount whitetail deer and third place for a Professional Waterfowl, Asian Spotbill Duck.

It was his first time competing at this show. Whiteside plans to compete in the 2013 show as well, which will be in Grand Rapids.

Bryce Anthony Bellomo of Game Over Taxidermy entered three pieces of work in the competition. Due to time constraints he was not able to finish his deer or pedestal largemouth bass for the show so he took a deer off the wall, and two customer fish.

Bellomo won second place for a walleye mount in the professional fish division, second place for a largemouth bass in the professional division and third place for a whitetail deer wall mount in the professional division.

One mount in particular was a bittersweet learning experience, Bellomo said. The largemouth bass entry scored 87 points on the judge's score sheet and 90 points would have gotten a blue first place ribbon. He learned he received a three-point deduction from due to the attachment for the display being visible from behind the fish. He said it was a learning experience, which was the point of going to the competition.
