Letter: Be an informed voter in upcoming election

Why is that?:

Plastic bottles are okay but plastic bags are being banned. You can get arrested for hunting or fishing without a license but not for entering and remaining in our country illegally. Juveniles must get parents’ permission to go on a field trip or take an aspirin but not to get an abortion. Identification must be shown to board an airplane, cash a check, buy liquor or check out a library book but not to vote.

In New York City one can buy two 16 ounce sodas but not one 24 ounce soda because 24 ounces of a sugary drink is fattening. Our government believes that the best way to eradicate a trillion dollars in debt is to spend trillions more. A young boy can be suspended from school for saying his teacher is "cute," but hosting a sexual exploration or diversity class in grade school is acceptable.

Hard work and success are met with higher taxes and more government regulations and intrusion while not working is rewarded with food stamps, WIC checks, medical benefits, subsidized housing and free cell phones.

Being stripped of our Constitutional right to defend ourselves makes us more "safe" according to the government. Someone gets shot with a gun and the government wants increased gun control while a DUI individual kills or injures someone with an automobile and the driver goes to jail.

One could conclude that we are living in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

Not all, but many politicians don’t consult their constituents. They wait until election time to return and brag about their accomplishments and ask to be re-elected.

The longer they breathe that rarified air at the capitol the more they seem to develop the attitude of possessing superior intellect and subsequently give their constituents what they don’t want or need. Also, the longer they stay in office the more they become interested in themselves to the detriment of their constituents and the country. They strive to be career politicians.

In recent years people have become disgusted with the polarized, hostile, unconciliatory goings-on in government which has reached culmination and is reflected in the current election. As a result, both Democrat and Republican political establishments are seeing the possibility of their power slipping away as the non-establishment candidates gain support.

Be an informed voter.
