Enterprise editorial: Urgent call for food shelf donations

Body:

Time is marching on - for food shelf donations, that is. And Hubbard County Food Shelf director Bob Hansen is acutely concerned about meeting budgetary goals.

March is a critical month for the Hubbard County Food Shelf, he reports.

The food and funds donated to support the food shelf are reported to Minnesota FoodShare. The reported results establish the basis for the funding the food shelf receives from the state to address hunger solutions.

The final report is to be submitted April 11.

"I am very concerned about the contributions received to date," Hansen said.

The following depicts the previous three years’ support, as compared with the food and funds donated through March 31.

             Pounds of food      Cash donations

March 2013         22,816                 $71,126

March 2014                  28,989                  $64,695

March 2015                  31,214                  $63,487

March 2016                 24,409                  $33,723

Last year the Hubbard County Food Shelf served 3,995 families, consisting of 13,497 individuals, distributing 617,746 pounds of food.

Our expenditures for purchasing food, utilities and building maintenance averages $133,900 annually.

The Hubbard County Food Shelf operates with 100 percent volunteers, including the director. Therefore, every dollar donated is used for purchasing food, utilities and building maintenance. Based on the past three years, cash donations received during the March Food Shelf Campaign cover approximately 50 percent of our financial needs.

"I am very concerned about the current status of the financial donations received to date," Hansen said. "Food and funding received up until April 11 will be included in the March campaign reporting.  I pray that individuals, churches, clubs, social organizations and businesses understand the urgency and respond to our financial needs."

Donations to the Hubbard County Food Shelf may be sent 308 Pleasant Ave. S., Park Rapids, MN 56470.
