Living at Home: Lend a helping hand to an area senior

Judi Frye

Volunteering is about giving, contributing and helping other individuals and the community. Volunteering means working with others to make a meaningful contribution to a better community.

Why should you volunteer? Many people want to gain experience, acquire new skills, meet new people or expand their network of contacts as a way to get a new job or start a career. Others just want to give back to their community, help a friend or promote a worthwhile activity. They do it because it makes them feel good.

Here at Living at Home volunteers are the very backbone of our organization, and the lives of our area seniors are better because of it. Living at Home volunteers donate over 7,000 hours of time each year by providing services such as transportation, errands, medical escorts, respite care, light housekeeping, friendly visits, ramp building, light yard work and handyman repairs. Volunteers also are needed to help out with fundraising activities, office assistance, newsletter mailings, etc.

Volunteers attend an initial training to become familiar with our program and policies and all volunteers go through a background and driving record check to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Volunteers are provided with additional insurance and may also ask to be reimbursed for their mileage.

Like many of the Park Rapids area population, some of our volunteers are "snow birds" who go to a warmer climate during the cold Minnesota winters. We always look forward to their return and keep them busy during the summer months. However, we are still in need of more volunteers, especially those who reside in the area year-round.

Do you want to help your neighbors and give back to your community? Please consider becoming a Living at Home volunteer. We have applications at our office at 301 Hunt-singer Avenue (the Frank White building) or you can print one off at our website: (http://www.park rapidsliving plication_2012.pdf). Or give us a call at 732-3137 and we will mail one out to you.

A neighbor's independence depends on you!
