Helen Doris Stigman, age 91, of Park Rapids, MN passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Ecumen Cottage Memory Care in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Helen was born on February 7, 1926 in Verndale Township, Wadena County, MN to Amos and
Phoebe (Hathaway) Brown. There were three children in the family, Helen being the youngest with her brother Milton and sister Marjorie. She attended Verndale High School and graduated in 1943. Following High school, Helen attended teacher training school and taught country school for a year.
On July 25, 1945, Helen married the loved of her life, Lloyd Stigman, after he returned from Belgium having been severely wounded near the Battle of the Bulge. They were married outdoors on the lawn of her parents' farm in Verndale Township. Their life of love and respect for each other lasted nearly 72 years. Helen and Lloyd had three children - Jerry (Kathryn) Stigman of Pelican Rapids, MN; Eugene (Maxine) Stigman of Cherokee, NC; and Lynette (Fred) Jacobson of Racine, WI.
Helen was active in several community and church committees. She was an enthusiastic proponent of the public school system in Park Rapids and played significant roles in the mission of Riverside United Methodist Church through the years. She had many friends and was highly respected in the community.
Helen is survived by her three children and their spouses; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, her sister - Marge; several nieces and nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death in July of this year by Lloyd, her husband of nearly 72 years; her parents; Lloyds parents; her brother Milton; too many friends; and by "extra" special son - Gene (Margaret) Thompson.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday, November 17, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Riverside United Methodist Church in Park Rapids, MN. Visitation will begin at 11:30 am at the church on Friday. Inurnment will be held at the church columbarium. Friends may leave online condolences at ceasefuneralhome.com. Arrangements are being handled by the Cease Family Funeral Home of Park Rapids, MN.
