Hawley standoff ends with man shooting himself
A standoff Sunday near Hawley, Minn., between a Fargo man and members of the Clay County Sheriff's Office and Red River Valley SWAT Team ended with the man shooting himself, authorities said.
Dispatchers received a call at 2:26 p.m. that the man was suicidal and possibly had guns in his south Fargo residence.
The man was later reported as having a gun at his parents' home about 10 miles northwest of Hawley.
A half-dozen Clay County sheriff's deputies and the SWAT team's negotiation unit responded to the farmstead but never got the chance to talk to the man before he shot himself, Clay County Chief Deputy Matt Siiro said.
Lifeflight helicopter was dispatched to the scene at 8:05 p.m. The man, in his early 20s, was airlifted to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo with a life-threatening injury, Siiro said.
