Braves sweep past Lake Park-Audubon

A balanced offensive attack led the Menahga volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Lake Park-Audubon Tuesday night in a contest between Section 6A North rivals at Menahga.

The Braves had eight different players contribute at least two kills while four different players recorded an ace serve in the 25-14, 25-16, 25-21 victory.

Cierra Ahlf served an ace during a four-point run while Olivia Yliniemi had two kills and a block as Menahga jumped out to a 6-2 lead in Set 1. Jessica Pietila followed with an ace and four service points while Janie Tormanen recorded a block as the Braves extended their advantage to 12-5. A kill by Ahlf, a block by Tara Hendrickson and a kill by Tormanen made it 21-13 before Pietila served three points for a 24-13 edge. Madi Marjamaa's tip closed out the opening set.

A tip by Ahlf, a block and kill by Tormanen, and an ace serve by Pietila helped Menahga match LP-A in the early going in Set 2 before the Raiders used a 3-0 run to claim a 12-9 advantage. Marjamaa and Ahlf served four points apiece to give the Braves a 19-13 lead before kills by Hendrickson and Tormanen, a block by Hendrickson, and tips by Marjamaa and Pietila sparked a set-ending 6-3 run.

Marjamaa served two aces to start Set 3 as Menahga jumped out to a 7-0 lead. A kill by Pietila, a block by Hendrickson and a kill by Yliniemi gave the Braves a 13-4 cushion. LP-A rallied to within 14-12 before a kill by Hendrickson and two service points by Marjamaa provided a 19-14 advantage. A tip by Marjamaa helped close out the match.

Yliniemi led the Braves with six kills while Pietila had four kills. Tormanen, Ahlf and Marjamaa added three kills apiece with Rena Pinoniemi, Elly Hillukka and Hendrickson contributing two kills each. Ahlf and Marjamaa served 14 points each with Pietila following with 10 service points as those three combined to serve five aces. Marjamaa tallied 20 set assists.

Defensively, Hendrickson had four solo blocks with Tormanen and Yliniemi chipping in two solo blocks each. The Braves had 37 digs with Ahlf (8), Yliniemi (8), Pinoniemi (7) and Pietila (6) leading the way.

Menahga, which had nine service errors and 22 hitting errors, improved to 1-1 on the season.
