East-central Minn. school district closes due to possible threat

CAMBRIDGE, Minn. - A school district in east-central Minnesota is closed Wednesday, Feb. 28, due to a possible threat against the district.

An email sent from Cambridge-Isanti Schools around 7 Wednesday morning stated, “We became aware of a rumored, potential threat. We have not had sufficient time to fully investigate this threat per our protocols and we are taking precautionary measures to ensure we help keep students safe. All schools will be closed today, Wednesday, Feb. 28.”

The school added it treats all reports of threats seriously, and appreciates the public’s understanding as they work to address the matter.

“We are committed to sharing important information with you and will follow up about this matter as we are able,” stated the email.

Isanti County Sheriff Chris Caulk said this morning, Feb. 28, that he first heard about the threat when getting up this morning around 6 a.m. He said he had several emails and Facebook messages about the possible threat against the district.

Caulk said he received a screenshot of a Snapchat posting from a person who wrote, “So ... To everyone who attends CIHS, I have heard a rumor of an older kid (19) planning to enter the school to do a shooting spree. If you now this rumor to be true, you must speak up. If you know his name, speak up. I am not about to be a victim because everyone believes it’s a joke. Step up. Talk to Officer Peck or do something. Screenshot this and send it to friends. It may just be a rumor, but I’ve heard otherwise from many sources. This is not a joke. I’m concerned for everyone’s safety in our school. This is an important matter.”

Caulk supports the decision by the school district to close the schools for the day to allow for a complete investigation.

“If this is a legitimate threat, this individual or individuals have to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” Caulk said. “And even if it’s a rumor, we also need to hold these individuals accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
