Panthers take control in second half for 61-51 victory over D-G-F

A 12-5 run to open the second half gave the Park Rapids boys basketball team the lead for good in a 61-51 Section 8AA victory over Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Monday night at the Area High School gym.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 18-11 lead behind a pair of 3-pointers by Gabe Bagstad, three baskets by Jason Haas and a pair of jumpers by Jake Reish.

D-G-F responded with a 14-2 run as a 3-pointer and two inside baskets by Jacob Strand and three free throws by Aiden Leach produced a 25-20 advantage with 3:47 to play in the first half. A jumper by Blake Johnson and a layup by Bagstad gave Park Rapids a 26-25 edge before the Rebels carried a 27-26 lead into the intermission.

A layup by Reish, 3-pointers by Persons and Bagstad, and a three-point play by Reish gave the Panthers a 38-32 advantage with 11:33 to play. Another 3-pointer by Persons, a basket off a rebound by Jeff Haas, a jumper by Reish and a 3-pointer by Bagstad extended the lead to 52-43 with 5:05 to play.

Park Rapids sealed the win on a basket off a rebound by Bagstad and five free throws by Jason Haas down the stretch.

Persons had 17 points and four assists while Bagstad contributed 16 points and five steals to lead the Panthers, who improved to 6-2 against section teams. Reish (12) and Jeff Haas (11) also scored in double figures while Jeff Haas led the way with 12 rebounds as Park Rapids improved to 11-8 overall.

Leach and Strand scored 12 points apiece for the Rebels, who fell to 5-5 in section games and 8-11 overall.

Aitkin ends slide

Hunter Moe's 19 points helped Aitkin snap a 13-game losing streak with a 72-35 Mid-State Conference win over the Panthers at Aitkin on Feb. 2.

DJ Haasken added 14 points and David Curtiss scored 11 points as the Gobblers improved to 2-5 in the conference and 4-15 overall.

Persons (11) and Bagstad (10) hit double figures for the Panthers, who fell to 3-4 in the conference.
