Park Rapids, Menahga staging musical comedy “Urinetown”

Cast and crew of "Urinetown the Musical."

"Urinetown the Musical" is a 2001 Broadway show and winner of three Tony Awards.

A joint production by the Park Rapids and Menahga High Schools will be held Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 26-28 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. at the PRAHS auditorium.

Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, ”Urinetown” is an irreverently humorous satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theater itself! Nothing is safe from scrutiny, including the show itself, says Park Rapids Drama Director Juliann Kjenaas.

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, owned by a single mega-corporation that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. If they are unable to pay – they are forcibly sent to Urinetown. What and where is Urinetown?  No one knows. Pee afraid, pee very afraid!

Technical directors are Jamie Jokela and Victoria Harju. Costumes by Faith Kern. Cory Johnson is the show’s choreographer, while Jonathan Harrison is set construction consultant.
